Waste Disposal Legal Responsibilities

Legislation requires that in general you dispose of any of your waste in a sensible and responsible manner, be it general domestic waste such as garden rubbish, clinical waste from hospitals and nursing homes, hazardous waste from manufacturing industries, pet waste / dog waste or simply non-hazardous commercial waste.

A few pieces of legislation that may be of special interest are as follows:

Help keep our environment clean and safe.

  • The Collection and Disposal of Waste Regulations 1988

  • The Environmental Protection Act 1990

  • The Controlled Waste Regulations 1992

  • The Special Waste Regulations 1996
  • The Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996

  • The Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005
  • including the The Litter and The Dog Fouling (Fixed Penalty) Order 2005.

See the DEFRA website for a full list of UK environmental legislation.

Dog Waste

Dog fouling is a major issue in many different areas of the UK. Apart from the fact that dog fouling is a nuisance, it’s associated with various diseases.

Dog owners should clean up after their dog in public places - you can report dog fouling that isn't cleaned up, to your local council.

As a dog owner it is your responsibility to ensure that your dog does not foul public land.
